Holy Book of Hours | Christian Devotional Book | 1300-25

Description:

This manuscript represents the pinnacle of private medieval devotion and the rise of lay literacy in the early fourteenth century. As a "Book of Hours," it served as a personalized prayer book designed to allow wealthy individuals to structure their daily routines around monastic prayer cycles. Created during the transition from the High Gothic to the Late Gothic artistic style, this rare survival features elegant, elongated figures, delicate architectural framing, and vibrant historiated initials. The margins are heavily decorated with playful "drolleries", fantastical creatures, hybrid beasts, and secular comic scenes that contrast sharply with the sacred text.

Reflecting the immense wealth of its original patron, the manuscript utilizes costly ground lapis lazuli and burnished gold leaf, which would have shimmered under medieval candlelight. Over seven centuries, natural aging and human handling have profoundly altered the manuscript’s physical appearance, leaving behind a rich material history.
