This finely crafted accordion-fold manuscript, or sensul, captures the profound intersection of portability and spiritual defense unique to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Produced within the secluded monastic scriptoria of the East African highlands, this folding vellum book was engineered to serve traveling clergy and pilgrims as a personal, defensive talisman. The continuous parchment strip is densely inscribed with sacred liturgy in Ge'ez, the ancient Semitic language adopted when the Aksumite Empire embraced Christianity in the 4th century. Characterized by alternating strings of soot-based black and sacred red inks, the text is intentionally paired with vivid, hand-painted illuminations.

The iconography features highly expressive, stylized figures, led by a prominent depiction of Saint George on horseback—a revered patron protector in Ethiopian Christian tradition—alongside scenes of the Virgin and Child and holy figures in moments of instruction and prayer. Rendered in robust mineral pigments with heavy, rhythmic outlines, the wide, watchful eyes of the figures were crafted to project a protective, living presence over the owner.
