DESCRIPTION:

This exceptional 1784 liturgical volume reflects both the functional durability and the refined aesthetic of French ecclesiastical bookbinding during the late Ancien Régime. The exterior features a heavy, dark-toned calfskin leather binding decorated with subtle, blind-tooled geometric framing across the cover boards. Engineered for intensive ritual use, the book is fortified with elaborate, hand-stamped brass furniture, including protective corner plates, central bosses designed to keep the leather raised off surfaces, and heavy clasp anchor plates along the fore-edge. When opened, the volume reveals an interior marked by classical late-18th-century French typography and a central allegorical woodcut vignette on its formal title page. Printed in Paris by Cl. Simon under the authority of Jean-Baptiste-Joseph de Lubersac, Bishop of Chartres, the internal pages and weathered external leather showcase organic foxing, corner wear, and deep patination, altogether preserving over two centuries of historical provenance, material endurance, and sacred use.
