Large-scale choir books of this monumental size were heavily produced in the scriptoriums of Spain during this period to satisfy the standardized choral requirements of the Counter-Reformation. The manuscript is open to the Asperges me, a solemn chant from Psalm 51 performed during the ritual sprinkling of holy water before Sunday High Mass. Written in a bold, highly visible Gothic Rotunda liturgical book hand typical of the Iberian peninsula, the Latin text is accompanied by traditional Gregorian plainchant recorded on four-line red staves using square notation. The pages are enriched with striking red and blue Iberian puzzle initials featuring elaborate pen-work filigree, alongside calligraphic cadels that showcase advanced scribal mastery.
