16th-Century Spanish Monastic Antiphonal

Origin: Spain - The manuscript is identified as Spanish due to its Gothic Rotunda script, which features the exceptionally thick, rigid, and compressed lettering characteristic of Iberian scribes. Additionally, the distinct split-color puzzle initials are surrounded by dense, maze-like red and purple pen-flourishing that is a classic hallmark of 16th-century Spanish workshops.

Medium: Ink, tempera, and gold leaf on vellum; bound in pigskin over heavy wood boards with sterling silver hardware

Measures: 22" x 16" x 5"

DESCRIPTION:

This impressive, large-scale liturgical choir book measures 22" x 16" x 5" and represents a quintessential example of 16th-century Spanish monastic craftsmanship, dating from approximately 1500 to 1580. Large-scale choir books of this monumental size were heavily produced in the scriptoriums of Spain during this period to satisfy the standardized choral requirements of the Counter-Reformation. The manuscript is open to the Asperges me, a solemn chant from Psalm 51 performed during the ritual sprinkling of holy water before Sunday High Mass. Written in a bold, highly visible Gothic Rotunda liturgical book hand typical of the Iberian peninsula, the Latin text is accompanied by traditional Gregorian plainchant recorded on four-line red staves using square notation. The pages are enriched with striking red and blue Iberian puzzle initials featuring elaborate pen-work filigree, alongside calligraphic cadels that showcase advanced scribal mastery.

Crafted on heavy, durable animal parchment, the expansive leaves show a natural patination and surface wear consistent with decades of active use by a choir standing at a communal lectern. Reflecting a history of dedicated preservation, the volume was historically rebound in robust pigskin—a material highly favored in Western Europe for its exceptional longevity under heavy institutional and monastic use. This massive binding is further fortified and decorated with custom-fitted sterling silver corners, which serve as protective guards to stabilize the heavy wooden boards and shield the edges of this monumental sacred Spanish text.
