DESCRIPTION:

This monumental choir book was handcrafted in the 16th century at the Monastery of San Zoilo in Córdoba, Spain, to serve as an antiphonal for communal worship. Its massive proportions were a practical necessity of monastic life; before the widespread adoption of personal printing, an entire choir of monks stood together to read the text and music simultaneously from a single, centralized lectern. The interior showcases a wide range of vibrant blue and red "puzzle initials". The letter ‘O,’ shown in one of the photos, demmonstrates a meticulous Renaissance technique where scribes left thin channels of the raw, uninked animal skin exposed to cleanly divide the contrasting pigments. This acted as a vital visual anchor, marking the start of a new chant verse amid the high-contrast Gothic script. Scribes carefully color-coded these pages for the performers, utilizing dense black ink for the musical notes and lyrics, while switching to red ink for the "rubrics", the structural instructions telling the monks exactly when to stand, kneel, or change pitch. Because these books were subjected to heavy daily ritual use, the exterior was crafted like armor. The full calfskin leather cover is reinforced with heavy brass cornerpieces to prevent splitting under its immense weight, alongside raised, star-shaped metal bosses that acted like small legs. These studs elevated the heavy volume above rough or wet wooden tables, successfully preserving the precious handwritten vellum pages inside for centuries.

Featured on the covers, written in an old hand says: "Las historias En este Cuerpo estala Misa del Angel Custodio deCordova, y todaslas Antifonasde los comunes."
