The Company of Stationers, founded in 1403 and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1557, it held a monopoly over the publishing industry and was responsible for regulating it until the early

18th century. The Company's charter gave it the power to restrict printing, search for prohibited books, and establish the principle of copyright through registration in their registers. The Stationers' Company emerged from existing fraternities of textwriters, limners (illuminators), and bookbinders in London and was a highly significant

force in controlling the English book market for several centuries.
