Baldus de Ubaldis (Italian: Baldo degli Ubaldi; (1327 – 1400) was an Italian jurist, and a leading figure in Medieval Roman Law and the School of Postglossators (commentators). Many of Baldus' works are incomplete. His major effort, however, went into the writing of some 3,000 consilia (legal opinions). No other medieval lawyer has so many consilia preserved. This is a volume of one of his later commentary works, Liber Sextus, in which Ubaldis commented on the Canon Law Compilations of Decretals. Decretals are letters of a pope that formulate decisions in ecclesiastical law of the Catholic Church. In themselves, the medieval decretals form a very special source which throws light on medieval conflicts and the approaches to their solution. They are sometimes concerned with very important issues touching on many aspects of medieval life, for example: marriage or legal procedure.
