1584 - Illuminated Choral Manuscript with Five-Boss Protective Hardware
Origin: Spain - The determination of its Spanish origin relies on distinct paleographical clues, musical notation markers, and physical binding characteristics unique to the Iberian Peninsula during the 16th century, alongside its recorded catalog history.
Medium: Ink, tempera, and gold leaf on vellum; bound in calf-tanned leather over heavy wood boards with brass hardware
Measures: 35" x 23" x 4.5"
DESCRIPTION:
This 1584 liturgical Antiphonal represents a magnificent example of late Renaissance book production, engineered for communal chanting by a choir reading simultaneously from a central lectern. The exterior is protected by a heavy, dark tan leather binding over wooden boards that exhibit deep natural patination from centuries of devotional use. To shield the leather from abrasion, the volume features a comprehensive suite of protective brass hardware, including five raised starburst-patterned bosses, foliate-engraved corner guards, and flush-mounted vertical side rails anchored with iron rivets.
Opening the massive book reveals interior leaves crafted from thick animal vellum, as seen on folio lxxv, which displays a formal Latin Gothic script paired with blocky black square neumes set upon five-line red staves. The visual anchor of the page is a large, vibrant decorative initial "G," meticulously executed in deep blue and terracotta red tempera. This initial features an intricate internal diaper pattern of repeating rosettes set against a background of fine, pale filigree work. Accompanying the primary black-letter chant text are small blocks of rubricated red text providing liturgical directions, while the perimeter margins show natural undulations and handling soil consistent with a heavily utilized choir book.
